What capability does the Joint Airlock give to the International Space Station?

NASA Insignia

The Joint Airlock, named Quest, allows space walks conducted with U.S. and Russian spacesuits to be based out of the International Space Station. Prior to Quest’s arrival and installation during STS-104, only space walks using the Russian Orlan spacesuit could be based out of the station, and space walks with the U.S. Extravehicular Mobility Unit spacesuit could only be based out of the shuttle.
