What species of spider is flying on STS-107?

NASA Insignia

One of the student experiments flying on STS-107 is called Spiders in Space. The spider chosen for the experiment is a garden orb weaver. The species was selected because it builds a perfect orb web, renews its web every night, is nonpoisonous and has a placid nature. The garden orb weaver is commonly found in Australia and New Zealand, and similar species are found in North America. The students who designed and developed the Spiders in Space experiment attend Glen Waverely Secondary College, Melbourne, Australia.
