To: Mark Ferring, flight director Question: Which way do plants grow when in space? Do they grow outwards in three dimensions, like an expanding ball, or head towards a light source? Answer: Hi Greg, this is a very good question! The plants grown in space are in an environmentally controlled container, which provides everything the plant needs to grow. This includes temperature and relative humidity control, water and nutrient delivery, and provision of a light source. Interestingly enough, being in a weightless environment is not a big driver for plant growth direction. As on Earth, in space the plants grow towards the light source, wherever that may be.
