Mission Control
Answers Your Questions

From: Luis, of Madrid, Spain
To: Wayne Hale, flight director for the ascent team

Question: My question is about the flight directors. I would like to know if all the missions have the same flight director or if it changes for every mission. Also, I would like to know how many flight directors are available in NASA, and how they reach the level of flight director. Thanks.

Answer: Hope to see you in the Flight Director Chair someday! There are 23 people currently serving as flight directors in either the International Space Station Control Center or the Shuttle Control Center. And that is just the American control center! We work about 8-hour shifts so there are three flight directors on duty for each vehicle each day. Flight directors are always chosen from the ranks of the flight controllers that serve at the other positions in Mission Control.
