Question: Many structures on the ISS and in the shuttle payload bays have white fabric coverings. What are they made of, and what do they do?

Answer: Mike,

The fabric coverings in the shuttle payload bay are part of the thermal protection system. They are made of silicon-impregnated glass fiber batting covered with Kapton.
