S69-39559 (20 July 1969) --- Astronaut Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., lunar module pilot, is seen standing by the Lunar Module (LM) ladder in this black and white reproduction taken from a telecast of the Apollo 11 lunar extravehicular activity (EVA). Also on the lunar surface with Aldrin was astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, commander. While astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the LM "Eagle" to explore the Sea of Tranquility region of the moon, astronaut Michael Collins, command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules (CSM) "Columbia" in lunar orbit. Armstrong became the first man to set foot on another celestial body.
