S69-39561 (20 July 1969) --- Astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, commander; and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., lunar module pilot, commemorate their historical landing and walk on the moon by planting the United States flag on the lunar surface. This view is a black and white reproduction taken from a telecast by the Apollo 11 lunar surface camera during extravehicular activity (EVA). While astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the Lunar Module (LM) "Eagle" to explore the Sea of Tranquility region of the moon, astronaut Michael Collins, command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules (CSM) "Columbia" in lunar orbit.
