Gorie mans the Spacecraft Communicator (CAPCOM) console in Houston's Mission Control Center just prior to the launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. Gorie was joined on this shift by astronaut Christopher J. Loria, out of frame. Atlantis launched on schedule, at 8:46 a.m. (EDT), September 8, 2000, as the Johnson Space Center (JSC) flight control team took the baton from KSC's launch controllers. "
