JSC2000-E-02746 --- The SRTM image shows sections of the southern part of Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. At 83,500 square kilometers, Hokkaido constitutes approximately 20 per cent of Japan's land surface, representing 90 per cent of the Japanese agricultural country. About 70 per cent of Hokkaido is covered with forest. The island has two different volcanic zones. The scene includes the northern and southern bank of the volcanic bay (Uchiura-wan). The volcano Komaga-take is near center frame.
