JSC2004-E-51814 (24 Nov. 2004) --- Astronaut John L. Phillips (left), Expedition 11 NASA space station science officer and flight engineer, participates in a mobility session of the Integrated Treadmill Locomotion Test (ITLT) at Johnson Space Center. The ITLT calls for subjects to walk on a motorized treadmill as changes are monitored in dynamic postural stability, head-trunk coordination, short-latency head stabilization responses, dynamic visual acuity, lower limb coordination strategies and gait cycle timing. The goal of this study is to develop an in-flight training regimen that facilitates the recovery of locomotor function after long-duration spaceflight. During this type of training, the subject gains experience producing the appropriate adaptive motor behavior under a variety of sensory conditions and response constraints. Jacob Bloomberg (center) and Brian Peters assisted Phillips.
