JSC2006-E-17293 (29 April 2006) --- NASA researchers anticipate a drill similar to the futuristic planetary drill tested in the Canadian Arctic will one day be used as field equipment by astronauts to bore into Mars’ polar caps or be mounted on robots for early exploration expeditions. JSC engineer Brian Derkowski used the drill to gather core samples for scientific study during a two week field test.
