A scanning electron micrograph of an apical meristem of Mir-grown wheat sampled when the plant was 16 days old. The meristem is completely vegetative and was typical of all meristems from all Mir wheat samplings. It is clear that no flowers formed on the plants grown in space, and this is further evidenced by the numerous leaves on many of the Mir plants. When flowers are intiated, leaf growth at that meristem halts.
