Answers Your Questions

From: Anna Chang, of Melbourne Victoria
To: Wayne Hale, lead flight director

Question: How much does it costs for each mission? Also, what is the approximate overall cost of space exploration?

Answer: Space exploration is very expensive, there is no other way to say it. But compared with other governmental activities, NASA has a very small budget. Less than 1/2 of 1 percent of the US Federal budget goes to space exploration. You can compare that with 25 to 30 percent for national defense or for social programs. It is important to remember that studies have shown that every dollar spent on space exploration has resulted in 7 dollars in new economic activity. How much can we afford to spend on our dreams? In those terms space exploration is not very expensive at all.
