Mass Storage Unit (MSU)

Problem: Two Orbiter electronic units, Operations recorder and the mass memory unit (MMU), have been experiencing obsolescence through repair costs and failure of operational units. It is currently estimated that these units will require replacement within the next two years.
Solution: A horizontal integration team has identified a consolidated single box concept to satisfy functional requirements while providing reduced power, less number of LRU's and reduced weight. In addition, this LRU will have capacity to accommodate additional memory to support proposed IVHM storage requirements.
Initial Operation Date: Date: estimated to be in FY 2000
Shuttle mission: TBD
Phase II Upgrade
Technology Goal: Utilize commercially available hardware to satisfy functional requirements while reducing weight, and number of LRU's.
Goals Supported: 3) Improve Supportability
4) Reduce Cost
